|The Story of Valentines Day
Under the rule of the Emperor Claudius 11 Rome was involved in many wars and the emperor was
having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was
the Roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all
marriages and engagements in Rome.
St. Valentine was a priest in Rome in the days of Claudius 11. He was said to of aided the
Christians by secretly marrying couples. St. Valentine was arrested and condemned to death
under Claudis's rule. While St. Valentine was in prison awaiting his faith, he befriended the jailor,
Asterius, who had a blind daughter. Asterius asked St. Valentine to heal his daughter and St.
Valentine performed a miracle restoring the daughter's sight.
Legend also said, St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his
friend, and signed it ~ "From Your Valentine" ~ ..... thus the tern ..Your Valentine.... began.
In the 1800's in the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first
Valentine Cards not realizing this would send a wave of sentimental exchanges for generations
and generations to come as a day to remember to say.....
